Killed in Action
Mr. and Mrs. Sutton, 7, Willmer Road, have received the official notification of the death in action of their second son Pte. William Sutton of the King’s Liverpool Regiment. Pte Sutton, who was 23 years of age, joined the colours a little over a year ago, and had only been in the fighting line for three weeks when he received his fatal wounds on March 15th. At the time of his death his elder brother, Frank, who is attached to the same regiment, was with him.
Pte. Sutton was an old scholar at the Higher Elementary School, and previous to joining the colours was in the employ of Mr. T Shaw, pawnbroker. He was an enthusiastic footballer, and captain of the Prenton Athletic Football Club. He would have attained his 23rd year on Monday next, the 26th inst.
Mr. and Mrs. Sutton have two other sons who are serving in the army, Frank, who came from Canada two years ago, and James, who joined seven weeks after the outbreak of the war. He was only 17 at the time, and previous to this was in the chemical department of Messrs. Lever Bros., Port Sunlight.
Although the newspaper reports the date of William’s death as 15th March 1917 the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records his death as 14th March 1917.
